Issue XXI – Welcome!
UHHH…Are We Okay?!
Not gonna lie – it feels a little dystopian to be writing a newsletter about sports after everything that happened in Minneapolis over the weekend. I don’t live in Minnesota, but my heart is still with everyone in that community and Alex Pretti’s family, friends, & co-workers.
Because of this, I thought long and hard about how I wanted to approach today’s issue. And I ultimately landed on a little history lesson about how sports and politics have never been separate and are, in fact, very much intertwined.
Because at some point in your sports-education venture, you’ll probably hear a Brad or Chad utter the phrase, “Just stick to sports,” regarding an athlete or organization that chooses to be outspoken about the injustices happening before our eyes.
Hell, you’re probably already hearing whispers of displeasure about Bad Bunny performing at this year’s Super Bowl (a direct example of a political statement, btw).
So, I hope that by the end of this issue, I’ve taught you something new and you’re well-prepared to combat that old and tired sentiment that sports aren’t political…because they very much are.
